Compostable packaging is a powerful marketing claim, but it is important to be precise about what "compostable" means. Bagasse packaging is designed for industrial composting, where high temperatures, moisture and microbial activity break down the material within weeks.
Industrial composting: the standard route
Industrial facilities reach the temperatures and moisture levels needed for bagasse to degrade reliably. These facilities are increasingly available across Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
Home composting: not the same environment
Home compost bins rarely reach the temperatures needed for bagasse to degrade reliably. This does not diminish the environmental benefit but it does mean consumer communication should be accurate.
Best practice for distributors
Specify "industrially compostable" on packaging and marketing materials, and point end users toward local industrial composting or organic waste collection services. Clarity builds trust and avoids greenwashing accusations.
